Introduction
It is actually easy to start working in this wiki. All it takes is to go to a page (or create a new one) and click the edit tab and then you can write or paste text into the editing window. The simplest way to start a new page is to write the title of the page in the search box and click Enter. If the page exists already, you will be taken there if the page does not exist you can select to start a new page with that name, by clicking the link create this page.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that MediaWiki uses wiki codes and not HTML tags to create layout or links. In the table below you will find the main wiki codes used to wikify text on the pages of the Lappia Wiki. Note that for many of these codes you can also use the simple editor buttons at the top of the editing screen, when you create or edit a page.
You can edit a wiki page by clicking the edit tab at the top of the page (although some pages may not allow editing, or only allow editing to users who are logged in with their own ID). If you are not logged in, you have to fill in a so-called captcha (a small calculation) before you can save your edit (This is done so as to stop spam bots from messing up the wiki pages).
When you save an edit to a wiki page, it is very helpful to you and other users if you fill in a concise summary of the nature of your edit below the edit window. This summary will show up in the page history and make it easier to trace back to earlier edits.
Security
The MediaWiki software is robust, but due to the open nature of a wiki, it is unavaoidable that persons who have no life pass by and try to leave their mark, pretty much like dogs do. This takes expression in two main ways:
- Vandalism
- Anonymous users can and in some cases will mess up the pages you have been working on. Usually they will replace text with inane remarks about their private parts or aimless insults. Please, take no offence of the feebleminded, but revert your page to your last bona fide edit. You can call in the help of the eoppimiskeskus in this matter if needed. Also, help out your fellow editors by removing vandalism when you see it (notify of this in the edit summary).
- Spam
- Anonymous users (usually spambots, in spite of the captcha, see above) may try and leave messages on any page including talk pages with links to sites where the unaware can be relieved of their personal information and their wallet. Always notify the eoppimiskeskus of such spam attacks, so that measures can be taken.
With an eye to security and accountability, make sure you edit only while logged in with your own ID. And remember not to panic, in a wiki nothing that was once saved is ever lost.

Outside (web) links can be created by putting the URL between single square brackets. For example: [http://www.tokem.fi] <br> However, you are advised to include link text. For example: [http://www.tokem.fi KT-AMK] (Note the space behind the URL) | |||||||||

It is possible that a page changes name, i.e. there was, for example, a page called Laatuasioita, but a new page was created called Laatu that contains all the information of Laatuasioita and more. However, there may still be links pointing to the previous page. To avoid confusion you can redirect readers from the page Laatuasioita to the page Laatu by pasting the code on the right at the top of the Laatuasioita page. |
#REDIRECT [[Laatu]] This code will automatically move users to the new Laatu page and thus avoid confusion between the old and the new page. | |||||||||

You can list sources the traditional way or create wiki references.[1] Wiki references will only work if they can be listed on the page like this: References |

You can add a page to one or more category pages (which list all pages in that category alphabetically) by adding a category link at the bottom of the page (see the bottom of this page). You can see an overview of existing categories at the Special:Categories page. |

Instead of using the "Embedded file" function icon in the button bar above the Edit window of a wiki page, it is much easier to copy the code displayed on the right and adapt it for use on your wiki page. It creates a picture box, right aligned, with a caption (as you can see). You can upload your picture to the wiki before (or after) you add the picture code to your wiki page, via the Upload file function in the toolbox to the left of your page. Make sure to upload only images that are free to use. |
The picture box to the right of the text on the
left is created with the following code:[[Image:toolbox.png|thumb|150px|The MediaWiki toolbox]]in which "toolbox.png" is the filename of the picture (replace with your own file). "150px" is the width of the picture (the height scales automatically). Make sure this width is no bigger than the actual pixel width of your image. "The MediaWiki toolbox" is the caption that appears below the picture in the box. | |||||||||

WidgetsWidgets are blocks that link to an outside service. Presently, Lappia Wiki has five widgets installed: | ||
| What you type | What it looks like | |
|---|---|---|
| YOUTUBE
The YouTube player to the right is created with the following code:
{| border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" align="right"
|{{#widget:YouTube|id=kaqxN4-qFx8}}
|-
|}
Note that this code places the video player on the right margin of the page with the text moving around it. If you wish it to be on the left, replace align="right" with align="left", and if you do not wish the text to move around the block, replace the code above with just
{{#widget:YouTube|id=kaqxN4-qFx8}}
The choice of video is determined by the video ID number ("kaqxN4-qFx8" in de the example here). Replace that code with the ID number of the YouTube video of your choice. |
| |
| What you type | What it looks like | |
| TWITTER
The Twitter block to the right is created with the following code:
{| border="0" cellpadding="5" align="right"
|{{#widget:Twitter
|user=eok_ktamk
|count=4
}}
|-
|}
Note that this code places the block on the right margin of the page with the text moving around it. If you wish it to be on the left, replace align="right" with align="left", and if you do not wish the text to move around the block, replace the code above with just
{{#widget:Twitter
|user=eok_ktamk
|count=4
}}
The Twitter messages displayed are determined by user account name ("eok_ktamk" in de the example here). Replace that code with the account name of the Twitter user of your choice. The count determined the number of message links that are displayed. |
| |
| What you type | What it looks like | |
| RSS FEED
The RSS feed block to the right is created with the following code:
{| border="1" cellpadding="5" align="right" width="400"
|{{#widget:Feed
|feedurl=http://some.lappia.fi/blogs/testtube/feed
|chan=title
|num=4
|desc=n
|date=y
|targ=y
}}
|-
|}
Note that this code places the block on the right margin of the page with the text moving around it. This is the recommended lay out. The RSS feed messages displayed are determined by feedurl, i.e. the feed link ("http://some.lappia.fi/blogs/testtube/feed" in de the example here). Replace that URL with the link of the RSS feed of your choice (and note that the feed URL must not end with a slash "/"!). The num determines the number of message links that are displayed. |
| |
| What you type | What it looks like | |
| SLIDESHARE
The Slideshare block to the right is created with the following code:
{{#widget:SlideShare
|doc=semantic-media-wiki-semantic-forms-1205504882436734-4
|width=425
|height=348
}}
Note that this code places the block on the left margin of the page. The text does not move around it. This is the recommended lay out. The slideshow displayed is determined by the doc code ("semantic-media-wiki-semantic-forms-1205504882436734-4" in de the example here). Replace that code with the code of the Slideshare slide show of your choice. |

| GOOGLE MAPS
The Google Maps block to the right can be created for you by an administrator (it is a bit tricky what with all the precise settings). Just send a request for one to an admin with the following information:
